Welcome
to Shaw Lakey Designs.
Shaw
was born in South Florida and has lived on the coast of North Carolina
since 1981. Surfing, sailing, diving and fishing, it is not surprising
he holds a degree in Marine Technology and is a USCG Master Captain.
Focusing
his love of the ocean and myriad hours on her into an artistic medium
was a process, not a step, taking years to develop. Shaw's mission
statement is simple, to be skillful in his work.
Flowing, charismatic whales,
playful octopus, magnificent angel fish, impressive eels, amusing sea
turtles, dynamic stingrays... These are but just a few of the lifelike
marine wood and copper sculptures Shaw creates, his pieces adorning galleries
nationally, and shows including Decor Expo Atlanta 2003, where Shaw was
invited for artists opening night.
Shaw
works with a variety of beautiful woods that stem from Wilmington, North
Carolina’s waterways and the Cape Fear River ~ Red Incense Cedar, Black
Walnut, Diseased Cypress, Maple, Teredo Live Oaks to name a few. Each
piece is hand polished and finished to enhance the wood’s grain and character.
Unique hand-painted eyes give the sculpture its whimsical look. Many pieces
he finds have a natural shape that is enhanced to bring the creature to
life, although Shaw does make signature pieces such as Flat Fish, and
Sting Ray, that can be made to order.
Each
piece is absolutely unique, there are no molds, dies, or production processes.
Shaw's
creations begin life here.
